Simple Joys

Yesterday I babysat my 9 month old niece.  Nothing like having a baby for the day to remind you of what’s really important.  A baby reminds you to be in the moment, every moment.  My house isn’t ‘baby-proofed’ so I need to keep my eyes on her at all times.  She’s not a snuggly girl but rather independent.

We have men at the house this week installing a new heating/cooling system.  At one point I put her in her playpen on the back porch while I sat close by writing.  She was giggling and ‘growling’ because that’s what she does when she’s content.  A young man on a ladder nearby paused what he was doing and began talking to her in a high pitched voice, “hi, hi, hi”.

I get so wrapped up in every day feeling like I need to have accomplished something… something tangible.  The baby was doing nothing but inspecting her fingers, checking out her toes, waving her toys all around and she was perfectly happy with that.  She knew that when she needed something, I was here to provide it.  She was more preoccupied with picking her nose or my nose than accomplishing anything substantial.  She was just living in the moment with no worries about tomorrow.

For today, I adopt that model. (…well, minus the nose-picking…)

I might even employ some of the nose picking! It’s liberating! Great post and such a darling photo of your niece!

Lovely post (and website)! I often think the same thing when I watch my cats, entranced by the trees outside my window for hours at a time.

Thanks Cara! I love watching my cats ‘watch’ too. They are so conscious of nature around them.
